Swaddling is an age-old practice of wrapping infants snugly so that movement of the limbs is tightly restricted. This mimics the close comfortable feeling of being inside the mothers womb. Studies show that swaddling reduces arousal or the tendency for the baby to awaken through startling. It has shown to enhance neuromuscular development of the very low birth weight infant; and that it might even have a role in lowering the risk of SIDS. Research has also found that swaddling helps infants stay in REM which is the deep portion of the sleep cycle, and may even help them to sleep for longer periods of time.
